BLAKELY, GA -- Brigadier general Shawn Harris, an Early County High School Alumni visited ECHS JROTC Bobcat Battalion April 20, 2021, when he was home on leave to visit with family. His visit was for encouragement, motivation and to give back to the school, cadets and community.
BG Harris explained to the Cadets what it means to serve this Nation as a General Officer, knowing the complexities of today's missions, knowing that success will be measured not merely by performance on the battlefield, but also by your understanding of the cultures and traditions and languages in the place where you serve and how attending the Army War College is a graduate-level instruction to senior military officers prepared him for senior leadership assignments and responsibilities.
BG Harris stressed the importance of setting goals in life and the ability to be able to encourage themselves as they face milestones; because along the way, I'm sure when you face a few moments when you asked yourself: "What am I doing here?" That will be the time to reach down and find intestinal fortitude. Apply yourselves.
He left them with this saying that the things that we have in common are: we are from a small town, I just like you attended Early County High School, raised on a dirt road. I became a General Officer, because I embraced my goal and applied myself. The sky is the limit and as long as you push yourself you can achieve the desires of your heart. Remember and apply the Army values: loyalty, duty, respect, selfless service and honor. The final piece is not to forget where you came from and always give back.
