From June 23–28, 2025, select cadets from Howard High School JROTC participated in the Junior Cadet Leadership Challenge (JCLC), hosted at Bowie State University. This annual summer leadership camp brought together cadets from across the region for a week of physically and mentally demanding activities designed to build confidence, leadership, and teamwork. Throughout the week, cadets engaged in a wide range of training events and competitions. Activities included STEM labs, robotics demonstrations, drone operations, leadership challenge, obstacles courses, and sports tournaments. Cadets also participated in drill competitions that tested their discipline, focus, and precision. One of the most challenging events was drown proofing, a water survival activity that taught cadets how to stay calm and composed in high-stress environments.
In addition to the demanding schedule, cadets trained in intense summer heat, often facing high temperatures and direct sun throughout the day. Despite the tough conditions, cadets demonstrated resilience and discipline, staying hydrated, encouraging one another, and pushing through each task with determination. Their ability to overcome environmental challenges made the week even more rewarding and showed true strength of character.
Beyond the training, the camp gave cadets the chance to build meaningful connections and friendships with peers from different schools. Many cited this as one of the most rewarding aspects of the experience, highlighting the value of teamwork and camaraderie. This year’s success would not have been possible without the dedication of both the Adult Cadre and the Cadet Cadre, who worked tirelessly to plan, supervise, and execute all activities. Their leadership and mentorship helped guide cadets through every challenge and ensured the camp ran smoothly from start to finish.
JCLC 2025 proved to be a powerful experience that pushed cadets out of their comfort zones and empowered them to lead with confidence. The Howard JROTC program is proud of its cadets for representing our school and community with excellence.
