On November 11, cadets from the Howard High Lions Battalion JROTC performed a Color Guard to commemorate Veterans Day at Veterans Elementary. This year, Veterans Elementary was asked if they wanted to participate in the “Annual Salute to Veterans Celebration Recognizing the Yingling-Ridgely VFW Post 742.”
With Veterans Elementary accepting, the Lions Battalion was glad to assist in the observation of this occasion. C/PVT Veera Mistry said, “It was a very fun and engaging experience with the guest speakers and students of Veterans Elementary who were intrigued with the Color Guard. They admired us in awe when we walked into the building.” For some cadets, it was their first time doing events like this such as C/SGT Laniyah Woodson.
She stated, “For her first time, it was cool. The kids were extremely excited and were saluting us, which was cute. The performance was well-done for my first time and I will do it again.” Additionally, other cadets were able to learn from participating in this event. As C/SGT Kaeley Kwon said, “The experience improved my ability in Color Guard and taught me to be more confident in movement.”
Although the cadets did not have time to stay around for the speakers, they all had a very enjoyable time in the morning showing the children of Veterans Elementary the high esteem of being in a team like Color Guard and growing together in skill. Given the opportunity, Howard High School’s JROTC will be glad to represent again and the cadets will be honored to participate.
