In the Junior Reserves Officers’ Training Corps, part of our overall curriculum is teaching the 7 Army Values which are: Loyalty, Duty, Respect, Self-Less Service, Honor, Integrity, & Personal Courage. As the Senior Army Instructor, I was extremely proud of my cadets coming through for a local church who reached out to us and asked if we could support children who were from low income and that their Christmas was going to be a stretch for their families. The church was providing food and helping with their daily expenses, however, they ask if we could sponsor some of the children who may not get a gift this year.

I asked all the cadets in each of our Companies, who would be willing to volunteer to take up the cause and make a child feel appreciative of receiving a gift from caring young adults, our Corps of Cadets. The cadets were able to purchase, with their own money, gifts for over 50 children in need. This year was a very challenging year for everyone in our Country and Communities. With COVID-19 and the other strains causing everyone to be cautious. However, even though most of our cadets also need help, to see that many Cadets step forward and participate was heartwarming to me.

I’ve taught Junior ROTC for over 24 years and I couldn’t be more proud of these Cadets than I’ve ever had in my program. They came through like the Champions they are. We’re not the biggest program on campus, but when called upon, we deliver. It’s no coincidence that the 7 Army Values abbreviation spells out – LDRSHIP and our Junior ROTC Motto is: To Motivate Young People To Be Better Citizens” speaks volumes as to the commitment shown by these cadets.
