HOUSTON, TX -- The Raul Yzaguirre Schools for Success, a Texas public charter school system, with two campuses in Houston and one in Brownsville, recently completed its annual Teacher of Year selection process. The process includes identifying a teacher at each campus who meets particular criteria as determined by the district, and includes: nominated by peers, student academic performance criteria, involvement in campus life, and voted for by their colleagues.

Having been nominated and voted on by his peers, Command Sergeant Major Michael Marquez was selected as the 2021 T-STEM Early College Middle & High School Teacher of the Year. CSM (R) Marquez has been employed as a JROTC instructor at RYSS since August 2003. He is one of the longest serving faculty members. In his own words he states, “There’s no greater sense of accomplishment then when former students come up to me in random places and tell me how much I (and JROTC in general) helped them with their life, work ethic, responsibility, values and decision making”.

CSM Marquez and the other teachers of the year will be honored during a dinner and awards ceremony Thursday, March 25, 2021 in Houston, TX.
