DALLAS, TX -- The Mesquite ISD JROTC Department held its first annual District VEX Robotics Competition on 6 February 2021. At the beginning of the 20-21 school year the Mesquite ISD JROTC program added Robotics as one of its many co-curricular activities. Working with the REC Foundation representative, Mr. Andy Schaafs and a District Robotics Mentor Ms. Michelle Newman, the district’s JROTC instructors underwent a series of professional development sessions and hands on training to prepare for this addition early in the school year. They also completed the 21hr Vex V5 Certification course.
In a year with very few activities this competition was a huge morale boost for the students, who fielded ten teams for the competition. North Mesquite’s A team took top honors winning the Excellence Award and Tournament Champion sharing the Tournament Champion with the North Mesquite B team. West Mesquite’s A team took the Design Award and their B team took the Robotics Skills Award. Mesquite’s A team took the Judges Award. The addition of Robotics has had a very positive impact on the JROTC programs in the district.
