GROVETOWN, GA -- On 1 August 2020, C/LTC Sonia Malika Tegang was awarded the Legion of Valor for outstanding achievement in the Reserve Officers Training Corps Program. Cadet Tegang serves as the Battalion Commander for the Warrior Battalion at the Grovetown High School in Grovetown, GA; she is a senior with a 4.0 GPA and ranks #1 in her graduating class of 440. She transferred to Grovetown HS in her sophomore year from Lakes High School. While attending Lakes HS, she represented the school at the 2019 National Student Leadership Conference and the 2020 National Society of High School Scholars.
Since arriving at Grovetown HS, Sonia served in the following organizations: the Spanish Honor Society, Math Honor Society, Student Government, French Club, Spanish Club, and is a member of the Math team. She speaks two languages fluently and puts many hours into learning her third, Spanish. Sonia won 1st place in a Spanish Declamation Contest at Clemson University against about 100 students from various high schools. She represented Grovetown HS in the Governor's Honors Program for English, in which she finished as a semi-finalist. Sonia won a Department of the Army Superior Cadet Award, Congress of Future Medical Leaders Award of Excellence. She commanded the Warrior Battalion Drill Team at the State JROTC Drill competition and won 4th place; she was also a member of the state-winning drill team. She won the Scholar-Athlete Award, Leadership Excellence Award, and several other academic certificates. Sonia created a non-profit organization called Graduation Foundation; the organization's goal is to help high school students graduate on time with grades that will propel them in life.
For her post-secondary education, Sonia plans to attend the United States Military Academy West Point. She intends to major in International Affairs, with follow-on service in the United States Army as an officer.
