The U.S. Surgeon General visited South Atlanta High School.

The U.S. Surgeon General visited South Atlanta High School on May 20th to talk to students about the dangers of tobacco.  Cadet captain Johnathon Coyotl escorted Surgeon General Vivek Murthy, MD, MBA, during his visit to Atlanta Public Schools.  Surgeon General Murthy talked to middle school and high school students about the hazards of smoking, especially for young people.

Dr. Murthy stated nine out of 10 smokers start before the age of eighteen and 1 out of 13 Americans will die prematurely due to the affects of smoking.  Murthy and students exchanged ideas on how to curb smoking use by teens.

Cadet Coyotl stated he enjoyed escorting the Surgeon General for the day, viewing it as a once in a lifetime opportunity.  He also said the visit motivated him not only about the affect of smoking, but encouraged him to continue working hard in school.
