Cadets escort World War Two Veterans on their Honor Flight... Are you next?

There are less than 200 Tuskegee Airmen left alive today. So when a new one comes out of the woodwork 70 years after the fact, it's history and national news.  On the 20th of May 2015, 96 year old Sergeant John Watson was honored by the entire West Virginia Delegation in the U.S. Capitol.  Senator Manchin presented Sergeant Watson with the Congressional Gold Medal and the iconic red jacket the organization is known by.

Walking behind Sergeant Watson's wheelchair all that day was Cadet Lieutenant Colonel Sudderth from Princeton High School.  He was his assigned escort on the 6th Always Free Honor Flight trip.  After the red carpet treatment at the Capitol, the day was spent visiting war memorials and receiving lots of attention from thankful Americans.  Schools plan field trips specifically to greet Honor Flights.  On this trip, a total of seven cadets from the 4 Mercer County High Schools each had their own 'Sergeant Watson' to escort for the full 25 hour trip to our nation's capitol.  Each will have memories and stories to last a lifetime.

Roughly 500 WW2 Veterans die each and every day.  There are less than 850,000 alive of the 16 million who served.  Honor Flight hubs all over the United States have the like-minded mission to offer each of them the opportunity to visit the memorial erected in their honor. The opportunities for JROTC Programs to support this most worthy cause have two limitations - imagination and time.  Although these heroes will be with us for two more decades, many don't travel well now. Before there is nothing that can be done.... now, right now is the time to act.
