Cadet Mitchel receives the Captian W. Peña Memorial Scholarship:
San Marcos Academy senior Logan Mitchell was recognized during the week of Veterans Day as the 2014 recipient of the Captain Paul W. Peña Memorial Scholarship.
This scholarship is presented each year to an SMA high school student who demonstrates loyalty, integrity and leadership qualities representative of Academy values. Paul’s mother, Mrs. Cecilia Peña of San Marcos, presented the award to Logan during an Academy chapel service Nov. 10.
Logan is a fourth-year student at SMA, where he is a member of the Junior ROTC program. He advanced from squad leader, to platoon sergeant, to company commander and is currently co-commander of the Color Guard as a Cadet First Lieutenant. He served in the Honor Company two years and in the Honor Platoon three years.
Currently the president of the Academy Student Ambassadors, Logan has been a member of the football and track teams for four years and the basketball and baseball teams for two years. He has also participated in band, National Honor Society and Fellowship of Christian Athletes and was one of the Academy’s representatives to Texas Boys State.
An active member of the Westover Baptist Church youth group, Logan has gone on two mission trips, served as the Assistant Director of Vacation Bible School for four years, and assisted with numerous volunteer projects. He is the son of Cathy and Steve Mitchell of San Marcos.
Captain Paul W. Peña was a 2000 graduate of SMA and a 2004 graduate of the U.S. Military Academy at West Point. He was killed in action in Afghanistan in January 2010. Following his death, Paul’s friends and family wanted to remember Paul through an endowed scholarship bearing his name.
